Biosecurity staff are headed to Auckland's Papatoetoe today, following the discovery of an Oriental fruitfly

It was discovered in a South Auckland trap yesterday, as part of Biosecurity New Zealand's national surveillance programme.

Biosecurity New Zealand Commissioner North Mike Inglis says it's unrelated to the recent six-week Queensland fruitfly operation in Mt Roskill.

He says they'll be imposing precautionary legal restrictions on the movement of produce out of Papatoetoe, with more details to be issued today.

The insect is no risk to humans, but a big risk to our horticulture industry.
