Pete Davidson has claimed Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary special had a "terrible audience"

The 31-year-old comic returned to the sketch show earlier this year for its milestone episode but he has lamented the fact they performed to a star-studded crowd because he claimed famous people are only interested in themselves and didn't care about the comedy

Speaking to Seth Meyers, another former SNL star, on Late Night, Pete said: "As you know from SNL40 - terrible audience. It's a terrible audience 'cause it's just famous people, and famous people only like themselves.

"It's true! I'm guilty of this."

Seth joked: "I remember when [your] pre-tape was playing, you were the only one laughing. We were like, 'Oh, he's coming in way too hot.'"

Despite his comments, when they weren't appearing in live sketches, the performers joined the rest of the crowd - which included the likes of Sabrina Carpenter, Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone - to watch the show, and Pete was thrilled to be seated next to Meryl Streep.

Seth showed a photo of the pair together and said: "Pete and Meryl. Classic."

His guest laughed: "Meryl rules. In typical SNL fashion, they don't tell you anything. You don't even know what's going on. I get to my seat and I just look and I'm like, 'This can't be right."

"It was Meryl Streep, and I just sat down.

"I'm like, 'I'm so sorry that I'm sitting next to you. You're the best.' And she's the best."

During the anniversary show, Pete got to reunite with his good friend John Mulaney for a sketch, and also revived his stupid Chad character for a piece with Laraine Newman, one of Saturday Night Live's original cast members.

He said: "Chad's fun - it's my one character that I got to do,

"In eight years of SNL, I had one character. But it's not a very flattering character.

"Everyone was so excited to see Laraine, and I just got my shirt off."
