Simon Bridges warns interfering in Tauranga City Council would be a "dramatic and draconian" step

Simon Bridges warns interfering in Tauranga City Council would be a "dramatic and draconian" step

Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta is considering stepping in, after Mayor Tenby Powell's shock resignation.

It came just after the council voted to install a crown manager - as recommended by an independent review into rampant infighting.

But the local MP is calling for caution, and Simon Bridges says Powell quitting will remove a significant source of friction.

Nanaia Mahuta acknowledges many councils - including Tauranga and Invercargill - are facing challenges.

But she says it's important as a small country to value local democracy, and work with the sector to ensure it's supported.
