All-rounder Nathan Smith has put his old province to the sword during his Wellington Firebirds cricket debut

Smith took career-best figures of 6 for 54 to help bowl his former team out for 180 in the second innings of their Plunket Shield clash at the Basin Reserve.

He only moved to the capital from Otago earlier this year.

Chasing 193 to win, Wellington are 63 without loss.

In Christchurch, Canterbury have started their chase for a massive 450 to beat the Central Stags at Hagley Oval.

    They're 53 without loss.

Central declared their second innings closed at 321 for six, with opener Greg Hay making 101.
