Serious concerns Maori and Pasifika aren't as protected from meningitis, as they should be

Serious concerns Maori and Pasifika aren't as protected from meningitis, as they should be

Several national landmarks will be lighting up purple today, to commemorate World Meningitis Day.

Maori make up 36 percent of cases so far this year -- with six of them aged under five, the highest of any group.

Meningitis Foundation chair Gerard Rushton, says it's especially concerning for Maori and Pasifika adolescents.

He says the vaccination criteria is far too narrow -- with only those in first year university halls of residence, boarding schools, prisons and barracks qualifying.
