A fire's burnt through three and a half kilometres of shelterbelt in Te Puna, Bay of Plenty, with 10 homes forced to evacuate

16 fire trucks and a helicopter have contained the fire near Snodgrass Road.

Fire and Emergency say they'll be working to extinguish the fire until twilight... and it's unclear if residents can return home tonight.

Western Bay of Plenty Mayor James Denyer says... it's quite a rural area... with a number of orchards.

He's been speaking to evacuated residents... waiting outside the fire.

Denyer says they're feeling shocked... but are doing the best they can.
