A coroner's urging wineries and other rural businesses to strengthen alcohol polices, after a winery employee died driving home from work drinks

A coroner's urging wineries and other rural businesses to strengthen alcohol polices, after a winery employee died driving home from work drinks

Daniel Oyaga died when his car rolled in Tasman, at Mahana near Motueka, in March 2022, only minutes after leaving work.

The 30-year-old was more than twice the legal limit after drinking with colleagues.

Associate Coroner Daniel Moore noted wineries are often in rural areas with limited transport options, heightening the risk of staff choosing to drink and drive.

He says while there's a significant element of personal responsibility, the employer has some responsibilities too.

Moore recommends businesses consider limiting alcohol to specific staff events where transport is organised.
