A potential calamity has imbued Geordie Beamish with the confidence to secure the country's first gold medal on the track in 42 years and 20 editions of the outdoor world athletics championships

The 28-year-old has won the 3000 metres steeplechase in Tokyo - New Zealand's six previous titles were in field events.

The feat marked an extraordinary turnaround after Beamish fell with only a lap to go in his heat, getting his head clipped in the process, before recovering to qualify.

Beamish also won the world championship indoor title in the 1500 metres at Glasgow last year.
