A new weather radar is on its way for Nelson-Tasman

The Minister for the South Island James Meager has announced funding for MetService to procure a new radar - to improve severe weather monitoring and response in the region.

Nelson-Tasman communities are still recovering from back to back devasting storms.

Meager says this is something the community has been asking for.

He says he hopes this will give locals peace of mind over their individual and property safety in future events.

A new radar will cost up to five million dollars, with operating costs of around 800 thousand dollars per year.
