NFL week one: Josh Allen leads Bills comeback over Ravens, Aaron Rodgers shines for Steelers, spitting incidents continue

NFL week one sees Aaron Rodgers down his former teammates in New York, Micah Parsons finds his feet immediately in Green Bay, and the American football spitting issue trickles down to the college game. Here are our five quick hits from week one.

The NFL is back with a jam-packed week one slate of games over in the USA.

Week one is, of course, far too early to get a read on how the rest of the season will pan out, but that's not going to stop people reading into just about anything and everything that the first suite of games has served up.

Whether it's a legendary star putting the boot into a former team, or a recent transfer proving his worth, here's what went down in week one of the NFL.

    1. Bills pulls off comeback to sink Ravens in a classic

Two heavyweights of the AFC laid down an early marker for game of the season.

Josh Allen led Buffalo to three scores in the final 4 minutes, the last a 32-yard field goal by Matt Prater as time expired, and the Bills rallied from 15 points down to stun the Baltimore Ravens 41-40.

Buffalo scored 16 points in the last 3:56, with Prater's kick capping a nine-play, 66-yard drive over the final 1:26.

Allen went 33 of 46 for 394 yards with two touchdowns and scored two more rushing in a match-up of the NFL’s past two MVPs.

He spoiled a strong performance by Lamar Jackson, the 2023 MVP, who went 14 of 19 for 210 yards and two scores while adding 70 yards rushing and another TD.

Derrick Henry rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns for Baltimore but also contributed to the loss by fumbling with 3:06 left in the final quarter.

After the Bills got within 40-32 on Allen's 10-yard touchdown pass to Keon Coleman, Henry lost the ball and the Bills capitalised, with Allen scoring on a one-yard run.

The Bills failed to level the scores with the two-point conversion, but another stop from the Bills defence gave Allen and the offence a chance to win the game.

    2. Rodgers rolls back years in comeback win on Steelers debut

Aaron Rodgers turned back the clock with a vintage performance in his Steelers debut that featured big throws, no turnovers and a late victory over his former team.

Rodgers threw four touchdown passes — two in a 50-second span in the second half — and Chris Boswell kicked a go-ahead 60-yard field goal with 1:03 remaining to lead Pittsburgh to a 34-32 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday.

"I love beating everybody," Rodgers, who finished 22 of 30 for 244 yards and the four scores, said.

"It doesn't matter who it is."

But this one had to be a little more satisfying, especially after he was released by the Jets and new coach Aaron Glenn in the off-season.

"I was happy to beat everybody associated with the Jets," Rodgers said when asked if he was pleased to beat Glenn.

"I gave as much as I could to the team. I didn't have any hard feelings about it not working out. I didn't maybe appreciate the way it went down in the end, but that's in the past.

    "And we're one and zero."

    3. Spitting epidemic continues in college football

It's not been a great week for players spitting at each other in American football.

Just two days after Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting on Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott in the NFL opener, Florida defensive lineman Brendan Bett was ejected for spitting at a South Florida player late in the Gators' 18-16 upset loss on Saturday night.

Bett, who transferred to Florida after two years at Baylor, was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, kicked out of the game and escorted to the locker room after spitting in the face mask of Bulls offensive lineman Cole Skinner.

It was one of two penalties assessed against the Gators on the final, 87-yard drive that set up Nico Gramatica's 20-yard field goal on the final play.

"We'll take a good look at it, but it's unacceptable," Florida coach Billy Napier said.

"I think we've got a lot of players in that room as well that have the same belief that it's unacceptable.

"When a guy does something like that, he's compromising the team. He's putting himself before the team. Everything the game is about, you're compromising. So there will be lessons to be learned there. Yeah, it's that simple."

    4. Parsons gets sack on Packers debut

By acquiring defensive star Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys in a pre-season trade just a week before the start of the season, Green Bay rocketed into contention for the Super Bowl before a snap had been taken.

His first start for the Packers featured a sack and an impressive all-round display against two-time defending NFC North champions Detroit and gave those pundits even more pause for thought.

The Lions, who scored an NFL-high 33.2 points per game last season, didn't reach the end zone until the final minute of the game as the Packers won 27-13.

Jordan Love threw a pair of touchdown passes as the Packers got points on their opening three possessions at Lambeau Field, a place where the Lions had won their last seasons.

From there, it was Parsons and the defence though, with the former Cowboy edge rusher getting a huge ovation from the Lambeau Field crowd when he was introduced before the game.

He got his first sack as a Packer with just over 4 minutes left in the game and applied pressure that led to Evan Williams's second-quarter interception, thwarting a Lions scoring opportunity.

Love went 16 of 22 for 188 yards with touchdown passes of 15 yards to Tucker Kraft and 17 yards to Jayden Reed. Josh Jacobs added a three-yard score in the fourth quarter, giving him a touchdown in a franchise-record nine straight games.

The Packers went 1-5 in divisional games last year, but won their 13th consecutive home opener, giving them the longest such streak since the Miami Dolphins also won 13 straight from 1976-88.

    5. Lightning delays the inevitable

The game between Carolina and Jacksonville was delayed roughly 75 minutes because of severe weather and lightning in the area.

Panthers quarterback Bryce Young might have hoped the delay was even longer.

The 24-year-old turned over the ball three times in the game, including throwing two interceptions, as the Jaguars won 26-10.

Young completed 18 of 35 passes for 154 yards.

The Jaguars were leading 10-3 when, with 8:32 remaining in the second quarter, players and coaches headed to locker rooms.

Fans in open areas were asked to move to "protected areas" as a thunderstorm storm hovered north-east of EverBank Stadium in Florida.

    6. Kicking horror shows

Kickers don't tend to get much of the spotlight in the NFL — unless they're doing things wrong.

And boy did a couple of place kickers mess up this week.

Browns kicker Andre Szmyt missed an extra point and a 36-yard field goal in the second half as Cleveland lost their opener 17-16 to Cincinnati.

"What you've got to remember is that we've all been in a situation where we've all made mistakes before that have been a big part of costing us a football game. You got to shake it. It's not just on you. It's a team sport," quarterback Joe Flacco said about Szmyt's missed kicks.

"We're all going to be in there and rally together. Nobody wants to be in that situation and not come up for your team. But we've all been there and can understand not doing it."

Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo also struggled as his Atlanta side fell to a 23-20 defeat against the Buccaneers.

Koo, from South Korea, missed nine of his 31 kicks in 2024 and again fell short with a 44-yard field goal attempt that wasn't even close with 2 seconds remaining in the game.

"We've got to make those kicks," coach Rahaeem Morris said.

"Those are very makeable kicks. We've got to lock in and get that done."

Koo didn't hang around to address the media after the game. His locker was already cleared out by the time reporters and camera crews were allowed in.

It was left to his teammates to defend their kicker.

"We still trust him," said quarterback Michael Penix Jr, who directed a last-minute drive that put the Falcons in position to force overtime. "We still believe in him."

That being said, Tampa Bay's kicker Chase McLaughlin also had a tough day, missing from 44 yards in the third quarter and then hitting the upright with an extra point attempt in the final minute of the game.

"I'm not going to cuss here at the podium," coach Todd Bowles said.

"But I was pissed, to say the least."

All's well that ends well, I guess.
