Aaron Gate has secured New Zealand's first medal at the UCI track cycling World Championships, claiming silver in the men's omnium in Northern France

The 30-year-old was sitting second overall after winning the third-leg elimination race, but couldn't close the gap on Brit and eventual winner Ethan Hayter.

Gate admits he was simply no match for Hayter.

It's an incredible result for Gate, who only 11 weeks ago suffered a broken clavicle during the team pursuit at the Tokyo Olympics.

Gate competes overnight in the madison alongside Corbin Strong.
