The 5.5 million litre tank is co-funded by the Infrastructure Acceleration Fund, and has taken just under two years to finish.
Local Council acting chief executive Sean Mallon says it will increase the amount of drinking water stored for emergencies, and increase capability for fire fighters.
He says the new reservoir will provide Otaki residents with water all day should a pipe fail or break.
Kapiti Coast District Council is currently planning another water system to supply the Waitohu Plateau.
