Kamala Harris says she may run for US presidency again but hasn't made up her mind

The former US vice-president won't commit to making another bid for the White House yet, but reiterates she's "not done" with public service.

Former US vice-president Kamala Harris has told the BBC she may run for the White House again.

But she told the British broadcaster she has not decided whether or not that will happen — so there's still a question mark over her intentions for the next US election in 2028.

Ms Harris was in the UK promoting her book called 107 Days, which documents her experiences while campaigning in the 2024 presidential election.

After then-president Joe Biden bowed out of the race, Ms Harris ran as the Democratic candidate before losing the election to Republican candidate Donald Trump.

Ms Harris's hint about a possible second attempt to win the presidency came after BBC journalist Laura Kuenssberg asked Ms Harris about when her grandnieces would see a woman as the US leader

Here's a transcript of that exchange:

Harris: In their lifetime, for sure.

    BBC: Could it be you?

    Harris: Possibly.

BBC: Have you made a decision yet?

    Harris: No I have not.

The pair then went on to discuss how Ms Harris said she wrote in her book that she was not "done".

"That is correct, I'm not done, I have lived my entire career a life of service and it's in my bones and there are many ways to serve," Ms Harris said.

"I have not decided yet what I will do in the future beyond what I am doing right now."

Ms Harris is currently promoting her book, which was released in September this year.

She has been speaking at promotional events for the book across the US in the past few weeks, with ticketed events booked up until mid-November.

Her interview with the BBC coincided with a sold-out event at the London Literature Festival this week.

Ms Harris will also be appearing on the ABC's 7.30 program with Sarah Ferguson this week.

While in Australian politics a leader of a party can lose the election for prime minister while still winning their seat in parliament, the US political system is different.

The outcome of the presidential election meant that, after her loss, Ms Harris was no longer an elected official in the US.

However, she continues to participate in US politics as something of a public figure, putting out statements about the current government shutdown and the Gaza peace deal in recent weeks, as well as criticising the Trump administration.

In July, she ruled out running in next year's election for California governor — something some political commentators had touted as a potential next move after her loss.

"For now, my leadership — and public service — will not be in elected office," she said at the time.

"I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearless, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans."

She ended her statement saying people must fight for freedom and fairness, saying "I will remain in that fight".
