What happens to Prince Andrew's children? Princess Beatrice and Eugenie to keep their titles

What to know about the future of Andrew Mountbatten Windsor's daughters and their role in the royal family going forward.

As their father is swept up in controversy, the princesses Beatrice and Eugenie have been largely absent from the public eye.

Both Beatrice, 37, and Eugenie, 35, will remain princesses despite their father losing his princely title over his relationship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

While their father has been under scrutiny for years, the sisters, who are ninth and 12th in line to the British throne, have publicly stayed silent and carried on their lives, occasionally appearing at royal events in an unofficial capacity.

Here's what we know about their future roles in the royal family.

What will happen to Beatrice and Eugenie?

According to King George V's Letters Patent of 1917, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice will retain their titles because they are daughters of a son of a sovereign.

It is understood that retaining their titles may have been part of the negotiation between Andrew and King Charles.

The princesses are not working royals and do not carry out official duties on behalf of the king.

Beatrice works for a tech firm called Afiniti and Eugenie is an art gallery director.

Since her marriage to Jack Brooksbank in 2018, Eugenie has been referred to as Her Royal Highness Princess Eugenie, Mrs Jack Brooksbank.

Beatrice's moniker is Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice, Mrs Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

Neither of the princesses' husbands were given titles after marrying into the family.

There are currently 11 working royals:

    • King Charles III
    • Queen Camilla
    • William, Prince of Wales
    • Catherine, Princess of Wales
    • Princess Anne, Princess Royal
    • Prince Edward, Duke Of Edinburgh
    • Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh
    • Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester
    • Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester
    • Prince Edward, Duke of Kent
    • Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy

    Where are they?

British tabloid media have reported both princesses have been spending time outside of the country in the last few weeks as their parents faced scrutiny.

Eugenie was pictured in Paris on a trip with friends while Beatrice was pictured attending a work-related event in Saudi Arabia.

Each princess is married with children and live with their families.

Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, primarily live in Portugal but they do reside at the state-funded Ivy Cottage at Kensington Palace when in London.

Beatrice owns a house in the Cotswolds with her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, but also lives in state-funded apartments at St James's Palace.

It is understood neither will be asked to leave their homes.

Have they ever spoken out about their father?

Neither princess has publicly made a statement about their father's association with Jeffrey Epstein or the loss of his titles.

However, each princess has been affected by the controversies surrounding their father.

It is also understood Beatrice was present for negotiations prior to the infamous BBC Newsnight interview.

BBC producer Sam McAlister, who negotiated the interview, wrote in her book Scoops of a meeting Andrew had with the news show prior to the interview, where he brought his eldest daughter.

"To be frank, the only thing worse than speaking to a prospective interviewee about allegations of sexual impropriety, is having to do so in front of his daughter," she wrote.

McAlister said the princess was polite and engaged and carried a notebook and pen.

Following the interview and COVID-19 restrictions, Beatrice was forced to scale down her 2020 wedding.

The former prince did not appear in the two wedding photos released by the Palace, which showed the couple leaving the church with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

What relationship do the princesses have with the royal family?

It is unclear how much of a relationship the princesses will have with the rest of the royal family going forward.

The princesses have always been close with their cousins Prince William and Prince Harry and have been known to attend the yearly Christmas celebrations at Sandringham.

But the princesses and the heir to the throne have not been photographed together in several years.

The last event they were confirmed to have been together for was a garden party at Buckingham Palace in May of 2024.

The last time the princesses were photographed at a Christmas Day service at Sandringham was in 2023.

Both were close with their grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, and stood vigil by her coffin at Westminster Hall with their other first cousins following her death.
