Christchurch's Mayor wants to accelerate talks on forming a Greater Christchurch super-city

Councillors have been briefed on the proposal, pitched as an alternative to the Government's regional governance overhaul.

Policy advisors warned the Government plan could weaken decision-making - at a time Canterbury needs stability, clear leadership, and long-term direction.

Mayor Phil Mauger says it's no secret he's a fan of a unitary authority.

He says Council agreed a year ago that they'd further discuss the unitary model - and he's keen to simplify the system.
