Head is unbeaten on 142, Alex Carey is 52 not out, with the hosts 271 for 4 and holding a 356-run lead heading into Day 4.

Head has been praised for rising to the challenge of opening...but admits there's definitely times he'd prefer the middle order.

Already England would need to pull off the greatest ever fourth-innings chase at Adelaide Oval history to win this Test and claw their way back into the series.

Day four is due to begin at 12.30 this afternoon.
