There are plans for an under-construction cycleway in Auckland, to be ripped up again in a few years

There are plans for an under-construction cycleway in Auckland, to be ripped up again in a few years

The 5.3 million dollar Victoria St cycleway is part of roadworks currently reducing the city centre to a standstill.

It's understood a section will be dug up for a new linear park - with native trees, plantings and pavings.

The cycleway runs from Nelson St all the way past Victoria Park to the bottom of College Hill.

A 2016 council report says section of the cycleway between Nelson St and Halsey St, will be replaced by cycling within the public space of the linear park and on-street cycling.

National MP for Auckland Central Nikki Kaye says it doesn't make sense to dig up Victoria St again in a couple of years.

She'll be asking for a briefing.
