    Former Children's Commissioner and five-term National MP Roger McClay has died aged 80


    McClay represented the Taupo and Waikarimoana electorates for 15 years - holding multiple portfolios including Youth Affairs and Education.

    Rotorua MP Todd McClay says his father had a lifelong passion for child rights and helping young people get ahead.

    He says Roger McClay died peacefully surrounded by family - after a five-year cancer battle.

    He will be honoured at a service in Taupo on Thursday.
