A man whose son was stabbed to death in Greymouth says he hopes his killer can make something of himself - so it's not a double loss

A man whose son was stabbed to death in Greymouth says he hopes his killer can make something of himself - so it's not a double loss

18 year-old Lewis McKenzie was sentenced to four years in prison for stabbing 41-year-old Cyrus Alupis in July last year.

The High Court in Christchurch heard how the tragedy occurred after Lupis couldn't find his bottle of vodka, and accused McKenzie of having it.

He held a lighter up to the teen's face and told him he'd smash him.

McKenzie then got a hunting knife and stabbed Alupis twice.

In a victim impact statement Alupis' father described McKenzie as a young boy who society had a responsibility for.

He says didn't want him to end up like his son, tied up with gangs.

In sentencing, Justice Robert Osborne accepted Alupis had been the aggressor - that McKenzie suffered from ADHD and was genuinely remorseful.
