More than 30 family members and victims of the Christchurch mosque shootings are gathered in the High Court this morning

A 28-year-old Australian national is facing 51 murder charges, 40 attempted murder charges - and one charge of engaging in an act of terrorism, in relation to the March 15 terror attacks.

Justice Cameron Mander has excused the defendant from attending this morning's pre-trial hearing at the High Court.

Seven interpreters are on hand to answer questions and explain proceedings to families after the hearing.

The content of pre-trial hearings isn't allowed to be published.
