Two avoidable goals have the Wellington Phoenix ruing what might have been in their A-League football match against Sydney FC in the Capital

They've been held to a 2-all draw by the competition pace-setters, conceding an own goal and another off a defensive mix-up.

Coach Ufuk Talay says sometimes in football, things don't quite go your way.

The Phoenix remain sixth on the ladder, unbeaten in their last six games.

The Victory have beaten City 2-1 in the Melbourne derby, while Perth have trounced Newcastle 6-2.
