Kiwis are being urged to pop Christmas crackers, rather than explosive ones this summer

Kiwis are being urged to pop Christmas crackers, rather than explosive ones this summer

A major blaze broke out in the Coromandel Peninsula last night... believed to have started from fireworks.

The two hectare fire near Wharf Rd has been contained, and no injuries have been reported.

About 60 firefighters and two helicopters with monsoon buckets were able wrangle the blaze under control by midnight.

There's a total fire ban in the Coromandel during summer.
