Police were permitted to carry guns for weeks after the incident - on a quiet Richmond Street in February last year.
Today 33-year-old Tolu Ma'anaiama was sentenced to nine years behind bars at the High Court in Christchurch.
He was earlier found guilty of four charges of using a firearm against police - but acquitted on two charges of attempted murder.
After a brief car chase - Ma'anaiama had fired a shotgun at police.
He was then shot three times in the leg and chest.
