Mt Ruapehu is good for more than just skiing

Mt Ruapehu is good for more than just skiing

That's the message from Taupo's Mayor who's calling for Kiwi's to head to the region this winter, whether they hit the slopes or not.

Like many places, the Central North Island has been hit hard by a lack of tourists, but leaders are optimistic the ski season will help buffer the economic blow.

Taupo District Mayor David Trewavas says you can get a beautiful coffee without having to dust off your skis.

He says although he's not overly agile, he'll be taking his elderly relations up the Gondola for a beautiful lunch.
