The All Blacks loose forward hasn't featured since injuring his knee in the World Cup semi-final loss to England in late October.
Savea's been named on the Hurricanes bench for their Super Rugby Aotearoa opener against the Blues and coach Jason Holland says he's almost back to full fitness.
Chase Tiatia starts at fullback in place of the injured Jordie Barrett while Jackson Garden-Bachop gets the nod over Fletcher Smith at first-five.
The Hurricanes have gone for a six-two split on their bench with All Blacks Vaea Fifita and Asafo Aumua joining Savea in the reserves.
