Motorists are being urged to take extra care on central North Island highways due to the possibility of ice

NZTA's Waikato System Manager Cara Lauder says black ice can be hard to see and motorists should take particular care in shaded areas and on bridges.

She says people should consider delaying leaving to give time for ice to thaw - but not leaving it to late so they travel before it turns colder again and more ice forms.

Lauder says drivers should also maintain a safe following distance.
