A late-night fire at St Paul's Cathedral in the heart of Dunedin was most likely accidental

A late-night fire at St Paul's Cathedral in the heart of Dunedin was most likely accidental

Fire crews raced to the Octagon about 3.30 this morning - after a startled Uber driver smelled smoke coming from the historic building.

It took about two hours to bring the blaze under control.

St Paul's Cathedral has confirmed the fire damaged the newly restored apse - but fire crews prevented it from spreading further.

Fire investigator Scott Lanauze told the Otago Daily Times based on their inspection so far - it looks like the fire was accidentally lit.

He says they can't say yet what caused the blaze - but they're working on a few theories.
