Z Energy is installing water tanks at its car washes across the region, to save 12-million litres of water a year.
MetService forecasts a dry spring for Auckland, with dams well below normal levels.
Mayor Phil Goff hopes other companies follow suit.
He says it makes sense from both a conservation and business point of view, because the rain that goes into the tanks is free.
Auckland's dams are about 67-percent full -- they would normally be 89-percent full in early September.
