Strong winds fanned many fires across Otago to keep firefighters busy last week, and this is likely to be repeated.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand is asking landowners to check old burn sites to ensure they're out.
Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer Jason Sarich says a small amount of heat can easily re-ignite an old fire site, while winds can carry embers.
This could set alight tussock and scrub dried out by warm and windy days.
