Earl White received 35-thousand-dollars in redress for state care abuse ? but the Crown spent more than a million dollars fighting it

White has testified under a pseudonym at redress hearings for the Abuse in Care Royal Commission Inquiry, which continue in Auckland today.

He suffered physical and sexual abuse at Epuni Boys Home and Hokio Beach School in the 1970s.

White's bid for redress spent 12 years in the courts - ending in an ex-gratia payment in 2011.

He'd tried to settle out of court as early as 2002 - but the Crown fought on, spending between one and two-million-dollars in the process.

White says it's unbelievable, given the Crown already knew about abuse at Epuni and Hokio.
