The Maori Council is calling for transformational changes to New Zealand's prison system

The Maori Council is calling for transformational changes to New Zealand's prison system

It follows a six day stand-off at Waikeria Prison -- where 16 inmates took control of the top jail.

They caused irreparable fire damage to the facility, in protest at what they say are inhumane conditions.

Maori Council Executive Director Matthew Tukaki says the Government has the mandate to make changes.

He says we can't buy into the blame game - because we know what the problems are, we just have to fix them.
