Wellington's water woes are continuing to rise to the surface
4 February 2021
A broken stormwater pipe caused a sinkhole to open on Jervois Quay yesterday, resulting in traffic chaos.
It comes just a week after a wastewater pipe broke in nearby Mercer Street, and a water main burst in Aro Valley.
Wellington Water crews have worked through the night to get a temporary fix in place, so Jervois Quay is partly back open this morning.
Spokesperson Alex van Paassen says the sinkhole indicates wider problems.
He says the hole is between two and three metres wide, so it must have been eroding over some time.
