A fire crew remains at the scene of a big house fire, hours after it started in Takaka in Golden Bay

At its peak, six fire engines attended the blaze at an address on Patons Rock Rd, after emergency services were called out at about 4 this morning.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman says the large house is extensively damaged, and the fire s still being dampened down.

He says a fire investigator is at the scene, but it's not being treated as suspicious at this stage.

The two people in the house at the time the fire broke out got out safely.
