Many parts of the country have woken to the coldest morning of the year so far

Many parts of the country have woken to the coldest morning of the year so far

Fairlie in Canterbury's Mackenzie District may be the coldest part of the country -- with MacKenzie Weather recording minus six degrees at 6am.

It was also cold in Dunedin -- with MetService recording minus 5.2 degrees at the airport.

Waiouru was the coldest spot in the North Island, recording minus 3.5 degrees.

Icy conditions in the capital are causing delays for some train commuters.

Metlink says some services are delayed on the Hutt Valley line due to ice on the overhead wires.

It was also cold at Auckland -- with the airport recording 4.8 degrees at 6am.
