Five boys, aged 15 and 16, died about 7.30 last night after the car they were in smashed into a power pole in Washdyke, splitting the vehicle in half.
The driver, aged 19, is in a stable condition at Timaru Hospital.
Herald reporter, Kurt Bayer, has spoken to Ray Colvill, who saw racing and burnouts in the area about 6 o'clock.
He says the 70-year-old was so concerned he phoned 111.
Bayer says police say they went out to the area, but just 90 minutes later the tragic accident happened.
