Shingle and boulders have slid on to State Highway 73 in Otira Gorge.
A truck driver was caught out yesterday and forced to stop inside the rock shelter.
Waka Kotahi says a helicopter will use a monsoon bucket to sluice off loose shingle.
They say the road will remain closed today and overnight, and anyone wanting to cross needs to take the Lewis Pass.
