Tamaki Makaurau's borders lift at midnight, but two northbound checkpoints south of Whangarei will be in place.
Te Tai Tokerau Border Control will assist officers, and say they'll tolerate queues of around 30-minutes.
But when asked by Newstalk ZB's Heather du Plessis-Allan if that was true, Northland District Police Commander Tony Hill wouldn't confirm.
He says they need to get started to get a feel for it first.
Hill says it's their intention to check every Auckland passenger vehicle.
