A Watercare call operator says they received a report around 4pm.
Freelance journalist Russell Brown shared on twitter around 7pm that the water had stopped and a Watercare worker said it'd be hours before tap water returned.
The Watercare phone operator says the delay was caused by a combination of short staffing and a high number of callouts - around 13 across auckland since midday.
The cause remains unclear.
