The annual road toll fell in 2023

Police say provisionally, there were 340 road-related deaths last year -- down by 34 from 2022.

Police says while it's worth noting the reduction in overall deaths, there are still too many people who didn't get to spend the festive season with loved ones.

Speed, alcohol and drugs, and distraction, are still the main causes of death and serious injury.

Meanwhile, the Christmas holiday road toll sits at 15 -- and runs until 6am Wednesday.
