The 32nd seed from Canada held her nerve in a first-set tiebreak and went on to win 7-6 6-2 in a match lasting one hour and 33 minutes on John Cain Arena.
It was only Fernandez's second victory in what is her fifth Australian Open campaign.
Last year's finalists Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka headline the night session.
