The region's currently under level two restrictions, meaning residential sprinkler and irrigation systems cannot be used.
Previous modelling by Wellington Water showed a 76 percent chance of going to level three restrictions and a 33 percent chance of level four.
But updated charts now show a 60 percent chance of level three, and 23 percent likelihood of level four restrictions this summer.
NIWA has a slightly improved climate outlook, and Wellington Water says the aquifer and storage lakes are at a healthy level.
