The Chinese Embassy in Wellington says it strongly deplores a statement made by ministers this week

The Chinese Embassy in Wellington says it strongly deplores a statement made by ministers this week

The scathing remarks are in response to a joint statement by Foreign Minister Winston Peters, Defence Minister Judith Collins and their Australian counterparts.

The four criticised China for the erosion of freedoms in Hong Kong, and the repression of Uyghurs .

It also indicated New Zealand's supportive of Australia's Aukus deal with the US and UK to procure nuclear-powered submarines.

In the response the Chinese Government made clear its displeasure.

It also appears to carry an implicit threat the strong relations New Zealand currently enjoys with China might not continue if the Government continues to pivot towards Australia and the US.
