A grandmother and granddaughter will be thanking their lucky stars after a late night rescue

The pair set out for a bush walk about 4.30pm on Sunday with their four dogs at the base of Northland's Mangamukas.

They lost their way and Police received a call for help at about 7.40pm.

Police say the information they got indicated both women had no food or water - and the only mobile on hand had 10 percent battery and no data.

Far North Land Search and Rescue members made voice contact around 10.30pm and an hour later the pair were being walked out safe and well.
