There's been a boom in the number of sea lion pups around the coast of Dunedin

There's been a boom in the number of sea lion pups around the coast of Dunedin

More than 30 of the nationally vulnerable species have been born this breeding season - the best on record for the area.

There's thought to be 34 breeding females around Dunedin - and about 160-to-200 sea lions in total.

Department of Conservation biodiversity ranger Jim Fyfe says 29 pups have been tagged to date.

He says they're thrilled with the big jump after 21 pups were born last season.

People are asked to keep an eye out for sea lions - especially when driving on coastal roads - and give them plenty of space.
