An unlicensed driver who ran over a motorcyclist before fleeing in Hastings will carry out a community-based sentence

73 year old Ian Charles Johnson died in Wellington Hospital, three weeks after being run over on St Aubyn Street East in June last year.

The driver who hit him, 48-year-old Fatima Mohammed, was found by Police at a friend's house.

Herald Open Justice reports Mohammed pleaded guilty to charges of careless driving causing death and failing to stop to ascertain an injury.

She's been sentenced to three months of community detention with a curfew, 150 hours of community work, and 12 months supervision.

She's also been ordered to pay more than $15,000 in reparation.
