Concerns New Zealand's failed to uphold children's human rights

Concerns New Zealand's failed to uphold children's human rights

The UN Human Rights Council's raised a series of rights issues - in our country's five-yearly Universal Periodic Review in Geneva last night.

They include allowing children as young as 10 to be prosecuted for a criminal offence.

The UN five years ago set the limit at 14.

Amnesty International's Lisa Woods says children's brains, and judgment and decision making, are still developing.

Woods says we need to address what drives criminal offending, like trauma or a lack of health support.
