A birthing centre in Lower Hutt that controversially closed three years ago, could reopen with new funding

The 12-bed Te Awakairangi Birthing Centre, funded through the Wright Family Foundation, had to shut in 2021 when the Hutt Valley DHB wouldn't support the struggling charity.

More than six thousand people signed a petition to save it.

A briefing on the centre's future, requested by Health Minister Shane Reti, has been released to our newsroom, showing Health New Zealand re-considering its future.
