The chill's continuing for much of the country, with temperatures set to plummet overnight

The chill's continuing for much of the country, with temperatures set to plummet overnight

Many parts of the South Island will drop below zero, with Wanaka among places falling to minus-five degrees.

NZTA's closed State Highway 8 between Twizel and Fairlie, and State Highway 80 between Lake Pukaki and Aoraki/ Mount Cook, because of the ongoing risk of snow.

MetService metereologist Samkelo Magwala says we can expect temperatures to remain below freezing in some areas tomorrow.

He says the snowfall in the South Island will linger as cold air and morning frosts stay with us for a couple of days.
