Oversight into the Police is being beefed up, after revelations senior leadership ignored allegations that Jevon McSkimming was a sexual predator

Oversight into the Police is being beefed up, after revelations senior leadership ignored allegations that Jevon McSkimming was a sexual predator

The former Deputy Police Commissioner is awaiting sentence after pleading guilty to having child sexual exploitation and bestiality material on his work devices.

An IPCA report finds leaders, including the former Police Commissioner Andrew Coster, ignored a young woman's anonymous complaints against McSkimming.

Instead of an investigation - her emails were used to prosecute her for harassment.

Police Commissioner Richard Chambers says it's not the fault of police force, it was a failure of leadership.

He says the absolute worst outcome would be if sexual abuse victims didn't feel safe reporting to Police.

Public Service Minister Judith Collins says the new Inspector General of the Police, will be much more invasive than the IPCA.

She says as an example, the Inspector General of the Intelligence Services can go into any file, any time, anywhere.
