The North Island is continuing to get a battering from the weather this weekend

The North Island is continuing to get a battering from the weather this weekend

Otorohanga and Waipa are under states of emergency.

There's been serious damage to the water system in the Pirongia area of Waipa.

A man died flood waters in Otorohanga's State Highway 39 yesterday and 80 residents who were evacuated yesterday are being cared for at marae and churches.

In Tairawhiti there's concern about rain falling on already sodden grounds.

Gisborne Mayor Rehette Stoltz says authorities are bracing for bad weather which is kicking in today.

She says the region has not had much of a break.

Stoltz says the region had been under civil defence emergency since January 20 until Wednesday but they are now preparing for more bad weather.
